If you have a spare day during your visit to Tokyo, consider a day excursion to Chinatown in Yokohama. Jump on Toyoko Line, get off at Motomachi Chukagai and you’ll find yourself in a much-talked about exotic part of Yokohama in half an hour or so.

Yokohama Chinatown began to develop when the port of Yokohama opened in the 1850s and many people from China started to arrive and settled there.
A wide range of buns
Today Yokohama Chinatown is the biggest Chinatown not only in Japan but in Asia (apparently one of the biggest in the world, too). There are more than 250 restaurants and many interesting shops on the main and back streets. It’s very easy to get lost in Yokohama Chinatown.

Plan your day so that you will get to stroll the town in the late morning and have lunch there. Chinatown at night is beautiful, too, but dinner can be a little pricer 😉 There are many all you can eat restaurants there but we recommend you try an old establishment like Kashouro if you go all the way to Yokohama.

Another thing that has become quite popular there is fortune tellers. You’ll see tens of fortune telling houses throughout Chinatown and the fee starts anywhere from 500 yen (one hand only;-).

After lunch and a good stroll in Chinatown, also visit Yamashita Park and then walk down to Motomachi for souvenir shopping, too!
