You’ll see many different kinds of sweets while in Japan, but you should definitely try the beauty of Daifuku sweets, one of the most traditional confectionaries. It’s a mochi (a glutinous rice cake) stuffed with sweet filling, most typically anko, red bean paste.
The most popular is Ichigo (strawberry) Daifuku with white mochi stuffed with anko and a strawberry (Picture 1 below). Sakuramochi is equally popular, consisting of a pink-colored mochi with anko and a pickled Sakura leaf (Picture 2 below).
Nowadays Daifuku comes in different varieties, including our favorite, cream cheese Daifuku (Picture 3 below). Japanese traditional confectionaries including Daifuku are often beautifully decorated. It is the simplicity of the decoration that makes them so beautiful.
